About the M5 x 0.9 thread

M5 x 0.9 is a metric thread with a 5.000 mm major diameter and a 0.9 mm pitch, giving a minor diameter of about 4.026 mm. In aluminum, brass and plastics, drill 4.1 mm for about 75% thread engagement. In steel, stainless and cast iron, step up to 4.4 mm for about 50% engagement, which cuts tapping torque and the risk of a broken tap while keeping most of the thread's strip strength. For an M5 screw to pass through, drill 5.3 mm for a close fit or 5.5 mm for a free fit.
