M17 x 1.5 is a metric thread with a 17.000 mm major diameter and a 1.5 mm pitch, giving a minor diameter of about 15.376 mm. In aluminum, brass and plastics, drill 15.5 mm for about 75% thread engagement. In steel, stainless and cast iron, step up to 16.0 mm for about 50% engagement, which cuts tapping torque and the risk of a broken tap while keeping most of the thread's strip strength. For an M17 screw to pass through, drill 18.0 mm for a close fit or 18.5 mm for a free fit.
