About the 1/2-28 thread

1/2-28 is a UNEF (Unified National Extra Fine) thread with a 0.5000" major diameter and 28 threads per inch, giving a minor diameter of 0.4562". The standard tap drill is 15/32 (0.4688") for aluminum, brass, plastics and steel alike, which leaves roughly 75% thread engagement. For a 1/2" screw to pass through, drill 33/64 (0.5156") for a close fit or 17/32 (0.5312") for a free fit.

Form (roll) tap: drill 31/64 or 12.3 mm (0.4844") for about 64% thread. Form taps displace metal instead of cutting it, so they need a larger hole than a cut tap, aimed here at 65% thread.

Cut-tap thread percentage = 76.98 × TPI × (major − drill), in inches. Smaller drills leave more thread but raise tapping torque; above about 75% the extra strength is small. Form tap drill = major − 0.0068 × thread % × pitch.
